Members of Access Energy Cooperative celebrated the 2016 Annual Meeting of Members on August 2nd at McMillan Park in Mt. Pleasant. Even with the downpour of rain throughout day, the crowd was estimated at 3,300.

Members received a warm welcome to their meeting by Mount Pleasant Mayor Steve Brimhall. Speakers reported during the business session under the tents on “Working Together” and the cooperative’s growth and contribution to the communities.

Kevin Wheeler was introduced to the membership as the new General Manager/CEO of Access Energy Cooperative. Also at the annual meeting, Robert Paul Smith, Fred Hickenbottom and Marvin Newton were elected as directors to serve three-year terms on the nine-person board.

Access Energy Cooperative, was recognized for economic development accomplishments and commitment to our local communities and having been instrumental in numerous development projects and initiatives in southern Iowa for many years. In recognition of leadership and support, the Cooperative was presented with an Iowa Area Development Grant Impact Award for project development. Two examples of development projects that Access Energy supported include the Iowa Fertilizer Company’s major investment near Wever resulting in significant job creation for the area, and MM Composite’s new manufacturing facility in the Crossroads Industrial Park in Mount Pleasant.

The Grand Prize of a $750 bill credit was awarded to Trisha DeVore. We will start over with a $250 bill credit for the grand prize next year. Dividend checks totaling 2016 of $969,670 were available for members to pick up at the meeting. For those who were unable to make it to the meeting, their checks will be mailed out in the next few weeks.

Other highlights of the event included an outstanding performance by Jake McVey, a great meal served by Mount Pleasant HyVee, and even though some of the activities had to be cancelled due to the weather, people still enjoyed the drive-a-tractor by Joel Proennecke and Dick McGohan, carousel and ground train rides from Midwest Old Threshers, free popcorn from the IRenew  renewable energy trailer, a live line demonstration on being safe around electricity, free blood pressure checks and information from the Henry County Health Center, Milestones, and the Area Agency on Aging. Plus information booths on the new Smarthub billing venue,  the Coop Connections Card, and Coops Vote, in addition to energy efficiency and safety information.

Following the meeting, the board of directors met at their annual reorganizational meeting. The following were elected as the officers of the Access Energy Cooperative Board of Directors: President Jerry Barker, Vice President Fred Hickenbottom, Secretary David Hollingsworth, and Treasurer Marvin Newton.
