At the December board meeting, the Board of Directors approved our energy efficiency goals for 2010 through 2014. This was a part of legislation that passed in 2008 requiring all electric cooperatives and municipal utilities in Iowa to undertake a study of their energy efficiency potential. We were fortunate to be able to utilize much of the analysis that Clearsprings Energy Advisors used in developing our energy efficiency rebate programs. Based on Clearsprings’ study we have the potential of reducing our energy consumption by about 0.5% each year for the next five years. This would lower our wholesale power cost by about $62,000 a year.

The only way we can meet our potential for energy savings is if you take advantage of our programs to help reduce your energy use. As you can see from the articles in this edition of Highline Headlines, we are ready to help. Click here for ways we can help you find ways to save energy. The best way for you to reduce your energy use and for us to meet our goals, is to weatherize your home. Our free energy audit can advise you on what measures you need to take. We may suggest added insulation or the replacement of windows. We may recommend something as simple as caulking and weather-stripping. Based on the results of your energy audit, we can help with rebates and/or low cost financing for the improvements you make. For improvements made in 2010, you may also be eligible for a federal tax credit.

As I have said before, we don’t have a lot of control over long term increases in our wholesale power cost, but we can help control the increases in your energy use. Please take advantage of our energy efficiency programs and help us meet our potential for energy savings.
