What is a Base Charge?
The base charge is a fixed charge for each account that covers the costs associated with providing a meter and service to the location. It includes costs such as meter installation and maintenance, as well as administration costs.
Base charges vary by rate class, as they are determined by the costs for each rate class individually according to the expenses that apply to that class of service. The base charge is similar to your monthly charge for phone service, cable service, and where applicable your water service.
What is a Demand Charge?
Electric demand is the rate at which electricity is used at a given time and is measured in kilowatts (kW).
The “Demand Charge” listed on your bill represents the average of the 15-minute interval when you used the highest amount of electricity during that billing period. The date and time is printed next to the demand to indicate that demand was set.
